PRESS RELEASE Nº85
Appeal to the international community to refrain RPF government from carrying out terrorist acts against refugees in their asylum countries.
In less than three weeks, 4 trucks of rwandan refugees in Nairobi have been burnt by gangsters suspected to be at the payroll of the RPF government.
One belonging to Mr MUTAKI was burnt down on NAKURU road, another one belonging to Mr GATARAMA was burnt in Nairobi, the third one belonging to Mr NSHIMIYUMUREMYI Ephron was burnt in MOMBASA, while the attempt to burn the fourth one belonging to Mr NDANGUZA was foiled by the police.
In the latest incident which was reported in the Daily Nation newspaper of August 29, 1996, one of the attackers gunned down by the police was found with a rwandese passport.
According to eye witnesses, three men had approached the truck of Mr NDANGUZA, parked at the CALTEX petrol station at the JOGOO and OUTERING road junction and started sprinkling petrol on it.
A watchman nearby raised an alarm which prompted the gang to flee in disarray. The watchman chased one of the gangsters, who tried unsuccessfully to shoot him when he felt cornered. Fortunately, a mobile police patrol passed by and gunned down the gangster in a shoot out that ensued.
These incident have followed unsuccessful attempts on the lives of 5 refugees, including Mr BASABOSE PIERRE, shot and wounded in May 1995 and whose mansion in KIGALI has been grabbed by none other than the President of Rwanda himself, Mr BIZIMUNGU PASTEUR; Mr KABUGA FELICIEN in December 1995 whose properties have been confiscated by the government or paid out to RPF war debtors;and Mr SENDASHONGA SETH, former RPF minister of internal affairs. One would recall that in the latter incident, a rwandese diplomat by the name of Mr MUGABO Francis, was caught red handed on the scene of the crime.
The new wave of attacks aimed at destroying properties of refugees after a lull that followed the departure from Nairobi of Mr MUGABO and his colleagues, has sent shivers along the spine of the refugee community living in Kenya especially that it follows reliable information that RPF government has completed training and sent hit squads in many foreign capitals, notably NAIROBI to eliminate real or imaginary refugee leaders and important businessmen.
It may be mentioned that the KIGALI strongman, major general Paul KAGAME threatened that he would follow and execute anybody he considers criminal irrespective of contrary findings by the International Tribunal for Rwanda.
RDR appeals very earnestly to the international community and particularly to countries hosting refugees to put pressure on RPF government and refrain it from carrying out acts of terrorism against refugees.
