PRESS RELEASE Nº 44

RDR is sending an S.O.S message in favour of rwandese refugees living in Burundi, victims of harassment by extremist elements of the Burundi Army.

The latest incident that happened in the camps of NTAMBA and MUGANO underlines the shakiness of their security and calls for UNHCR to assume its responsibility and beef up security within and outside the camps.

It is disturbing for the UNHCR representative in Burundi to play down the legitimate fear of feeling rwandese refugees out he move yet, at the time of shooting, there was, according to him, no official of any humanitarian organisation.

While calling for reenforcement of security measures around all camps of rwandese refugees in Burundi, no RDR humbly requests Tanzanian authorities, to betray their reknow panafricanism, and welcome rwandese refugees stranded at heir border.

It is particularly requesting the same authorities to review their stand and reconsider to their threat to deport to Rwanda those who, out of fear, have managed to cross the border illegally.

Depending on the trend of the security situation in Burundi, RDR calls upon UNHCR to see ways and means of evacuating from Burundi all rwandese refugees for a safer asylum country.
